BillBRO Baggins.

Chillin' on the shores of my collective subconscious.

It's a blessing and a curse that the band I'm absolutely nuts over right now has only four songs currently released. Denver, Co. husband and wife duo Tennis ride the general chillwave/indie summer aesthetic pretty hard (see: fuzzed out vocals, jangly guitars, etc. etc.) but they just do it so much better than anyone else in the game. I wish I had the elegant prose to describe them better, but I find the music speaks for itself. Recently signed to Jersey based Underwater Peoples Records which also holds Real Estate, Ducktails and Julian Lynch, they'll have a record out hopefully by the end of 2010/beginning of 2011.

The-Dream is killing it right now with his new album LoveKing which happens to be the best Prince album Prince never made. But I thought I would take it back to 2008 and unveil a track from the second half of The-Dream's album Love Vs. Money entitled "Right Side of My Brain". A lush, elegant, auto-tuned break up jam that double times as orgasmic ear candy. When I first started listening to The-Dream, it was out of novelty. In a sense no one really took R&B seriously a la R. Kelly's Trapped in The Closet but the more and more Dream started increasing his output it was in which the Music world was forced to acknowledge Terius Nash as a relevant and serious force in making good 'pop' music that could transcend musical genres. While The-Dream has gotten more face time in the scene, I find it hard to understand why he hasn't been recognized as the superstar he deserves to be. While your at it, check out the Drake jam he produces as well as guests on. Slayer.

Young Man

Don't know much about this kid, but he sure as hell is talented. His name's Colin Caulfield, he records under the alias 'Young Man' and this is his first release. Great study music.

Lonesome Dove

"A man who wouldn't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough."
Augustus McCrae

My Roommate & I endured the 384 minutes of Lonesome Dove this past week. Then we watched parts III and IV again.
We laughed, we cried, we watched Young Guns afterward unfortunately.
Hands down. It's the ultimate bro movie ever.
Sick.

Race In - Battles

"Race In", the opening track off of Battles debut Mirrored is something of extraordinary power. Upon first listen, one may compare it to what an assembly line would sound like if they had an extremely eccentric and loud jam session. But no, these are actually humans composing this work. To see these bros go to work and play these instruments live at Bonnaroo was an absolute treat. I haven't listened to Battles in quite a while, but the sound of my friends computer crashing was enough to compel me to go back and take another listen. Thank God, it still sounds great.

No Hope Kids - Wavves
Beach Demon - Wavves

After this past weekend, it's really been Wavves that's on my mind. The sun's starting to come out, my wallets getting thinner, the days are getting are longer, the kids are at the beach, and the law's on my back. What better time to listen to something like "No Hope Kids". I've found myself humming this tune incessantly as I walk to class eating my Chik-Fil-A sandwich on the parent's bill. Thanks Mom. Wavves certainly grew on me. At first it was just so loud and all too much for me to handle, but then soon enough Nathan Williams and his snot-nosed little project caught on the me like wildfire. This is how I like a guitar to sound, all beat to hell. "Beach Demon" is one helluva track too. Being a little fuck-up/menace to society never sounded like so much goddamn fun.

Hate it Here - Wilco

When Sky Blue Sky first came out, I refused to listen to it. I listened to A Ghost is Born when I was in 9th grade and it was weird, but it was perfect. So when people and reviews kept telling me that Sky Blue Sky slow and boring, I decided to just skip it. Well, then I heard "Impossible, Germany" and I was all like, "No shit?" and then on the way out to Sullivan's Island, Kyle Brown showed me "Hate it Here", and I was all like "Fuck yeah!" The whole song's just so smooth and Tweedy's delivery is so on point, while Nels Cline just brings it. I still haven't listened to Wilco (The Album), but maybe there's a song like this that'll make me reconsider.

Breakneck Speed - Tokyo Police Club

That guitar tone that opens up "Breakneck Speed", the first song released on Tokyo Police Club's upcoming sophomore effort Champ, sound's an awful lot like an xx riff. But then Dave Monks' familar voice comes through and the drums pop off and the volume gets turned up and it's all wonderful. Tokyo Police Club have never been known for really 'changing the game' per se, but what they do is deliver such solid post-emo music that you can't really get upset with them. This time is no different. Elephant Shell was a fulfilling effort and if this is any indication as to what's going to come from TPC this time, they may even raise the bar on themselves.

Welcome Back Everybody!

Ok y'all. So this one's a doozy.
But. I think you can handle it.
Nothing but the finest choice jams.
From Spring Breakwave to Post-Spring Breakwave.
It's All Here.

P.S. Hope you're enjoying the beach.

Dead Sun (Museum of Bella Artes Remix) - Liquid Vega
A Deliberate, Paced Electro/Disco-pop with a dark edge. Should be played very late at night.

So Insane - Discovery
Between jj's "My Way" and "So Insane" it's a toss-up for jam of spring break. I have a soft spot for Breakbeats and falsetto's.

My Chariot - Depreciation Guild
I was really excited to see this band get some good press. I know they're at SXSW doing their thing right now. When my roommate Dustin and I were traveling around Europe this summer, we had the pleasure to go see The Pains of Pure at Heart play there first European gig in Antwerp, Belgium. It was a pretty good show, but the highlight was getting the opportunity to meet the band. We were some of the only American's there and we stuck out pretty easily. We struck up a conversation with Cristoph, who's not actually in POBPAH but was asked to play guitar to add some much needed texture to their live show. Bro couldn't have been nicer. He told us about the name of his band, but I was sort of drunk at this point and Dustin and I both forgot it. So when I stumbled upon a picture of Christoph with his band The Depreciation Guild, I couldn't have been more excited. In fact, the band's got a pretty solid sound for themselves. Check it out.

The Zookeeper's Boy - Mew
When I first heard My Chariot by The Depreciation Guild, I couldn't help but think of Mew. I've had countless times arguing about how awesome Mew is, but everyone has something against the Danish. Maybe this will change your mind.

Want You Back (Phaseone Remix) - Nite Jewel
Phaseone has always laid down some sick shit, and this is no exception. His remix of Nite Jewel's "I Want You Back" is pretty fantastic. As per usual, he cranks up the moodiness for good measure.

Show My Ass - Dominique Young Unique
This 18-year old from Tampa is a goddamn firestarter. With such reckless abandon, Unique's flow is go for broke bonkers. I'm sure Diplo wants to get his hands on this.

In Heat (Javelin Remix) - HEALTH

Usually when I listen to HEALTH, I'm in a pretty aggressive mood so I was blown away to hear them sound so funky and smooth. Javelin does a great job of retaining the original feel of the song while creating their own interpretation. The original's still fantastic.

It's Working - MGMT

So, I listened to Congratulations by MGMT with the impression it would blow after listening to "Flash Delirium" when it was released. I was completely, utterly wrong. This isn't the same band anymore. There is no "Kids" or "Electric Feel" on this album, just insanse progged out psychedelia a la Dukes of Stratosphear. Even "Flash Delirium" seems to fit on the album. This album's gonna get a lot of shit and probably tank, but it's probably from kid's being so used to minimalist chill wave and other electro stuff. This album a complete one eighty from the likes and it's incredibly refreshing. Album opener "It's Working" is a good wrap up of the album as a whole and will give you a good idea of what the rest of Congratulations has in store for you. Enjoy.

BTSTU - Jai Paul
On first listen to this song, I had no idea what to expect. In the first thrity seconds I thought it was going to be a Mountain Man song. And then the 808 kicks in. Hot Chip wishes they could get this disgusting. By the way, this is a demo.

Beyond Fantasy - Pictureplane

Pictureplane really really crept up on me. His song Goth Star really just used to annoy me until repeated listens had me hooked. And now he does it again with "Beyond Fantasy". As usual, you may check your speakers to make sure nothing's wrong with them, but then the song settles and it sort of just sucks you in. Pictureplane's definitley honing in on his own style, which includes chipmunk-ish samples and this weird overlapping of sound. Listen and you'll get the picture.

Deerfield Village - Rangers

Super hazy, beat driven tune. Sounds like someone might sm0ke a b0wl to this jam man.

Fall Straight Back - Eternal Summers
Lo-fi as fuck. Sounds like someone found this underneath their parent's beach house.

Human Gay Bones - Harlem

It seems like every time I close out a post now, I have to put out a new Harlem track off of Hippies. Seriously though, how could I not. This album is gonna be on repeat all summer long for me. There's nothing I could say about this band that I haven't before, so I'll just let the sunshine and booze do the talking.

HEY BROS!!!!
SPRING BREAK '06!!!!!!!!

I say this everytime that I write, but I'll do it again... I haven't updated this in a while. I'm in the library on this lovely Wednesday evening finishing up preparing for my midterms and then headed off to lovely Little Torch Key. Conveniently located twenty-five miles from lovely Key West, I get the luxury of a quiet private little island and the debauchery of Duval Street all in one great package! They fourteen hour drive will be...grueling, but I think I can handle it. I don't feel like giving you any more prose than is absolutely needed, so this time I'll let the music do most of the talking. There has been so many good tunes that I've been listening to currently that I'll do my best to update again tomorrow or friday before I leave as to give you even more jams to add to a roadtrip playlist if you happen to be on the move like myself. Southward Ho!

Magic Lanterns: Dark Cicadas
This is the band that I wished played at every party I went to and this is the only song I've heard from them. Loud fuzzed out guitars with a serious funky attitude, riding basslines, and pounding drums. Total rage song. Reminds me of Jimi Hendrix for the indie scene. No need for words, here or there.

The Morning Benders: Excuses

50's esque doo-wop combined with modern indie-pop sensibilities. I got an Itunes gift card two Christmas' ago and I spent ten bucks of it on the Morning Benders first album due to Apple's recommendation of best 'Alternative' album of 2008. It really blew and I lost faith in Apple's credibility. After hearing this though, it seems The Morning Benders have found their niche, thanks to production credits from Chris Taylor, bass player/mulit-instrumentalist from Grizzly Bear. But really, It is imperative you look down below for an even more beautiful fleshed out live version of the song featuring John Vanderslice and that weird looking bro from 'Girls' (ironic).

Coyote Clean Up: Don't Worry Dub (feat. Orphan)
Some post chill-chillwave from some bro that I don't know much about. What I do know is that the bass in the song has this ability to make you feel as if you are in fact being sucked into a speaker. Some heady shit man.

Amanaz: Khala My Friend
Some African psychedelic music circa Ninetenn-seventy-something all the way from beautiful Zambia. One of my favorite songs of the moment, it should appeal to everyone. This jam sets the mood just right when I'm relaxing after a long hard day of NHL '10 with my bros. Seriously.

jj: My Way (feat. Lil' Wayne)

This song is pure magic. I never really caught on to 'jj' until I heard this song. Her slow cough syrup vocals and tropical haze aura mesh beautifully with weezy's flow. I have a hard time describing this one. JUST LISTEN.

*Artsy Bonus Music Video That Has Swede's Smoking L's In It*

Ryan Bingham: The Weary Kind

Saw "Crazy Heart" the other day. It's a small kind of movie if you catch my drift, but Jeff Bridges does an excellent job playing Country/Western has-been 'Bad Blake'. All of the music in it is fantastic if you're into that sort of thing, but this song takes the cake. I'm positive it'll win best picture by the way they hype up the song in the damn movie. However, I've never heard a tune with so much sadness and grief, yet so much sentiment. This is the only song I've heard from this guy but T-Bone Burnett produced it as well as wrote it and he's certainly got an eye for talent. Think Rocky Votolato but with room to grow.

PS I LOVE YOU: Facelove
Band name aside, best Broken Social Scene song that Broken Social Scene never made. Shreddin.

The-Dream: Love King
Radio Killa's back with the first leaked song off his last solo album (apparently). It's a pretty schizophrenic jam, one that I'm gonna need to listen to a couple more times before I figure out how I feel about it.

Harlem: Someday Soon

Banging on shit, breaking guitars. I can't wait for their album "Hippies". This maintains their ruff n' tumble lifestyle while adding a relatively sunny element to their repertoire.
